“The root of beauty was beautiful choices,” Epictetus philosophised 2000 years ago. He explained that you are what your choices make you, nothing more and nothing less.
I imagine that Epitetus was referring to true beautiful human behaviour, not merely physical beauty. Yet, it applies to both. Beauty, in either case, cannot be separated from the process, the regiment that creates it. It takes practice, it takes discipline, it takes sacrifice, it takes weeks and months and years. It’s the decision, day after day after day, to get out of bed early and go for a run. It’s how often you work with your mentor instead of a gaming device, the groceries instead of the fast food, the journal instead of the phone. It’s saying “no” to distractions, and “yes” to your own personal development.
So if you would like to be a better version of yourself, that gives you a good place to start—in your choices.
Everyday presents us with plenty of opportunities to make a choice—between beauty or ugliness; kindness or selfishness; mercy or vengeance; serenity or anger. If you want a beautiful life, there is no escaping it: you have to make beautiful choices.
